The book publishing industry has society and tens of thousands of would-be authors brainwashed that it is difficult to become a published author. Just as with other arenas of business, the internet and social media have opened new doors in many areas, including the area of publishing a book.
There are many women out there who have a “book” in them, and maybe more than one! We’ve heard horror stories about being rejected from publishers for so long, we shy away from sending a manuscript in.
The facts are this, ANYONE can publish as ebook. It is not some private club for the publishing companies. You do not have to have an agent or have tons of money to see your name on the “cover” of a book. And the other cool thing? You do not have to wait 18 months to 2 years from the time your manuscript is accepted and you see your name in print.
While many of the ebooks that are hitting the market today are non-fiction, there are quite a few fiction authors who are doing very well in the ebook arena. Sales of ebooks in Kindle format are hitting record numbers. So, if you have a story to tell, write it!
The first steps to publishing a ebook
1. Know that YOU can do this. You have something to say, and you can do it without a “professional”.
2. Determine your topic. If you already have a blog, you probably already have a niche you work in. Get a piece of paper out, or maybe even a white board or poster board. Start writing every topic you are interested in. And this is key, don’t try to write about a new subject, write about something you are PASSIONATE about.
I will probably write another post about helping you narrow down your topic, but for now, throw all ideas out there.
3. Know that you do not need any special software to create an ebook. Most people use Word to write their ebooks. In the beginning, you don’t really need to worry about formatting or anything, just write. I will share some resources on formatting and helping you with your cover in an upcoming post.
I will be writing more on this subject in the weeks to come. If you are ready to move forward with your idea now, I encourage you to check out the 2 resources I have here on the resource center. The first will help you with the actual writing of the ebook, and the second is fantastic for explaining marketing and getting the ebook launched.

Smashwords offers a free ebook explaining how to format for their site which seems to distribute more widely the ebooks. I am looking for a writer to share profits on a book if I design the cover and illustrate it. I could also do the formatting in SMASHWORDS & promote it via my blog & other blogs & writers I have linked with looking for cover design & illustration projects.
I have started writing my ebook but find that I need as many tips and information along the way to keep me going. Thank you for the advice. I hope to finish this summer!
