Copycat Starbucks Frappuccino at home

Mamas love their coffee. They NEED their coffee. For sanity, for energy, and just because it tastes good!

I have always been a coffee drinker. A HOT coffee drinker. I think I started drinking it when I worked at that 24 hour breakfast restaurant for my future father-in-law when I was a teenager, and have been hooked ever since.

I thought that cold coffee was nasty. Even when it became cool to drink iced coffee, I did not care for it one bit. 

I do have to tell you that I think my grandmother invented iced coffee a LONG time ago. I would spend summers with her in Miami. She would brew her pot of coffee, and she would always have some leftover. She would pour it into a jelly jar and place in the fridge. At 4 o’clock after her 2 hours of soaps were over, she would get up, put on her apron and pull her jar from the fridge. She plopped a couple of ice cubes and squeezed a couple of drops of saccharin in, stirred it up, and enjoyed her iced coffee on those hot Miami afternoons. I miss my sweet grandma.

But I digress. Fast forward to today. I LOVE iced coffee. It is like grownup chocolate milk. I could drink it by the gallon. Of course that is not really possible as I would be broke from giving Starbucks all my money, and even fluffier than I am now.

I found some alternatives to buying from Starbucks all the time.

 

 

First I found these, bottled Coffee Frappuccino. I love that these are available at most gas stations, ice cold!  They also have vanilla and mocha, but coffee is by fave. Cost $2.79 at most gas stations.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Then I found these, available at the grocery store. Usually around $5 for 6 packets. It is lightly sweetened, but you have to add your own milk (and I add more sugar too)

 

 

 

Since these were a little costly, I decided to see if I could come up with my own home version of Starbucks Iced Coffee/Frappuccino.

I tried just cooling some regular coffee and then icing it, but it watered down the coffee flavor. Below is the final process I came up with.

Supplies needed:

  • Coffee maker
  • ground coffee, caff or decaf, or a combination of the 2
  • sugar (or other sweetener)
  • milk or cream
  • a jar with a lid for storing brewed coffee
  • a cup with a lid :)

You will want to do this earlier in the day, or the night before, as you will not be able to drink it right after preparing.

1. Brew your coffee twice as strong as you normally would. I am currently using a small coffee pot because hubby broke my other carafe when we went camping. I have my eye on this 12 cup brushed stainless Cuisinart because my little 5 cup pot can’t keep up with me.

2.Let your strong coffee cool about an hour (and try to ignore the wonderful aroma in the air), then pour into a jar, or several jars and place in fridge for several hours, or even better overnight.

3. Get your cup with the lid. Fill between 1/3 to 1/2 with the cold, strong coffee.

4. Next add your milk. For me, I fill about 2/3 full.

5. Now for the sugar! My cup is 20 oz and I add 4 heaping spoons of sugar. Stir briskly to melt the sugar.

6. Fill the rest of the way with ice.

7. Put on your lid, give it a little swirl, just like they do at Starbucks, and ENJOY!

The 13.5 oz bottled Frappuccino costs $2.79 and has 270 calories.

Couple of notes:

You’ll have enough coffee from a full pot of coffee to make several cups of iced coffee.

You could always throw in the blender with the ice cubes to make it like a frozen cappuccino.

Adjust the sugar, coffee, and milk to your liking!

It tastes more like the bottled frap if I use whole milk, but we drink skim at home and I want to save the calories.

  • Great Idea. I have been doing this for about a Year and 1/2 now. I love coffee, but my stomach dose not always like it when it’s hot, Iced coffee is much better.

    I’d just go ahead and use the whole milk, after all, it’s. 96% fat free.

    It sounds great. But just for clarification… your directions are for an iced coffee, not a frappuccino.

      Lydia,
      I was actually referring to the frappuccino in the bottle that Starbucks sells in stores and gas stations. In the actual Starbucks, the Frap is a frozen blended coffee. I had to make a replacement for the bottled kind before I went broke! :)

    Tastes almost exactly like McDonald’s iced coffee, which isn’t Starbucks, but it’s really tasty!! Also, very low in carbs! :)

    I make something similar (I use International House creamer to up the sweet quotient) but what the kids love, is I make it in my old milk bottles (1/2 pint size they used to use in schools) that are approximately the shape of the Starbuck’s bottles. Come to think of it, I love it too!

    My grandmother also makes iced coffee. She drinks it every afternoon when she gets up from her nap. She actually pours some of her cooled coffee into an ice cube tray and by the afternoon it is frozen. She then puts her frozen coffee cubes in her class and pours the rest of the coffee over it. That way no watering down :) she drinks her coffee black w/ no sugar which I wish I was cool enough to do lol

  • I make a small jar of simple syrup as I find it mixes better than granular sugar. Boil equal amounts of sugar and water for a few minutes then cool and store covered in the fridge.

    Id suggest mixing the sugar in while the coffee is still hot so it disolves better; the syrup isnt a half bad idea either. we have a cheapo ($35walmart) esspresso machine(doesnt change cost b/c espresso is actually steamed coffee vs how its reg brewed so u use same product) and usualy do a double shot; then just top with cold milk and sugar or chocolate syrup
